The Cochrane Gambit, an alternative against the Russian Defense

The Cochrane Gambit, an alternative against the Russian Defense

   I. Defining the Cochrane Gambit -and the other “boring” classic variants. The Cochrane Gambit (which owes its name to John Cochrane, a Scottish amateur who used it consistently) is a knight sacrifice, played by White, in exchange for two pawns in the opening. Also, White gets a strong pawn center and some attack against the Black king, which is unable to castle. It’s not widely used by “big names” (with the honorable exception of the game Topalov-Kramnik, Linares 1999) -but in amateur and lower rated...

Anatoly Karpov Yevgenyevich (born May 23, 1951) is the twelfth world champion and one of the greatest of our sport. After getting the world champion title with no fight in 1975 -because Bobby Fischer failed to show up to defend his title-, he began a flurry of activity as trying to prove he was really deserving of the award. And boy, he did it! From 1975 to 1985 he was the undisputed best player in the world, and throughout his chess career can be counted 160! first places in international tournaments against the strongest opposition of the...

Evans Gambit Miniatures to Download

Here is a collection of miniatures of the Evans Gambit, the position that arises after: 1.e4, e5. 2Cf3, Cc6 3.Ac4, Ac5 4.b4!?, Axb4 5.c3 The idea behind this gambit is to gain tempi in development, opening lines and building a strong center at the expense of a pawn and winning time stalking the dark squared bishop. Among the fans of this gambit is the English grandmaster Nigel Short, who had no hesitation playing it against the very Garry Kasparov. Kasparov himself has played this gambit, like the stylish win against Anand. This gambit is...

A hardcore guide to study and train your chess openings (1st part)

* FIRST PART: BEGINNERS. 1. Introduction: This article has been difficult to write down. Since I announced it, it has been a couple of months and some readers have asked me if I am ever going to do it. It is not easy. First, there is a lot of literature in both printed books and articles scattered around the Internet.  While I have my own ideas about openings, I wanted to give an overview of the subject, respecting some opinions, especially since there are more respectable authors than myself, in playing strength and literary merits. Second,...

Jose Raul Capablanca y Graupera, 1203 chess games to download

November 19 1888: in a lost and small island in the Caribbean, was born a chess genius: Jose Raul Capablanca and Graupera. The little one only needed to be 4 years old and two feet tall to beat his father, and 7 years more to win the championship of the little island, which turned out to be, what a coincidence, my beloved Cuba. Many pages have been wasted about Capa, as some would say. That if he was a genius without parallel, a chess machine, invincible… and then, after losing to Alekhine in 1927, that it was his laziness, women, his...

Viswanathan Anand, 2948 chess games to download

Here are the complete games that the reigning World Chess Champion has played throughout his career until today. Viswanathan Anand, or just Anand, or even Vishy, as some gently named him, is probably the only world champion that has aroused universal feelings of sympathy in the history of chess, due to his proverbial good humor and friendly character, as featured in a paragraph of his biography on Wikipedia: “Anand has been viewed as an unassuming, benevolent person with a reputation of refraining from political and psychological ploys...

Alexander Alekhine (1892-1946) 2152 chess games to download

Here are the complete chess games (2152) from Alexander Alekhine (1892-1946), one of the most famous world champions. He was the only one who could stop The Machine to Play Chess, as they used to name to Capablanca. Known for his combinatorial talent, his fine positional sense and his extraordinary ability to play blindfold simultaneous, left us a rich legacy which still can be learned. A prolific writer with a terrific didactic style, wrote numerous chess books, especially the so-called “My best games of chess.” From him is the...

Garry Kasparov, (1963-) 2508 chess games to download

A lucky day but with a forbidden number of the year 1963, was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, someone who would become the most extraordinary chess player of all times, Garry Kimovich Weinstein, better known as Garry Kasparov. He learned to play at seven, and from that moment his life was marked by records whose best example is to have won the World Champion title at age 22. Son of Times and Changes, he is the World Champion who merged the two stages of contemporary chess (pre and post computers), adding his unique mark. It is also known as the Ogre...

Paul Charles Morphy (1837-1884) 386 Chess games to download

Paul Morphy, child prodigy, shooting star, pride and sorrow of American chess of the 19th century, left us a legacy of 386 games where his romantic style rose new heights at the time. Development of the pieces, opening lines over the center and the king-savaging combinations, was never so easy to understand, but their opponents could do little against him. His invasion over the cultured Europe was so overwhelming that the same Staunton (the reason for his trip to the Old World) avoided an encounter with him. I even have the suspicion that...
